K7 Bouclées – Cassette Loops

On the 31st of December, 1999 Boris Yeltsin announced he would be standing down as president of Russia after serving since 1991. In his televised resignation speech (there are subtitled videos widely accessible online) he conceded to some of his failures of the people of Russia and declared the forthcoming takeover of then prime minister Vladimir Putin. The audio of this speech features alongside the music of this record.

I came to this area of history by way of Masha Gessen's book "The Future is History", which is also the source of the title.

This album is composed of numerous cassette loops I created in Autumn 2020. Some of these were quite delicate and as such played back inconsistently, warping the sound and pitch. From these I made short pieces that were performed into my DAW. These pieces were then compiled into three longer tracks, which I bounced back down to cassette along with Yeltsin's speech, and then re-digitised.

The final 3 minutes of the second piece are not a cassette loop but a synth improvisation recorded to cassette. This is the one moment when the music breaks free of closed cycles.
